Armour’s Apples Pty Ltd is owned and managed by the Armour family. Ian, Helene, Doug, Dianne and David all work in the business. David is the fourth generation of Armours to grow apples in the Warragul area.
The main farm is at Bona Vista, with another block at Lardner; both near Warragul in West Gippsland. The area has about 15 apple growing enterprises producing about 20,000 tonnes of apples. Apples grown in the district are noted for their flavour and keeping quality. They are grown in a lush green environment which is cooler than most mainland production areas.
In total the Armour family employ about 25 full and part time staff with extra casual staff employed for peak times such as thinning and harvest.
Today the major variety grown is Pink Lady™, but for some years Fuji was the largest, and is a speciality. Granny Smith and Royal Gala complete the top four, with Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Jonathon and the new Jazz™ also grown.
